19th Century Conspicuous Consumption: Artistic Examples of Alexandria's Unique Cast Iron Downspouts with Michael Mark Ludlow. An illustrated look at these unique, mostly locally manufactured downspouts from a period perspective and their relationship to the Athenaeum building (their place in time and space); and a consideration of these objects of material culture as expressers of social class. These objects may exist for practical purposes, but more importantly may exist as social messengers via conspicuous consumption. These messages are expressed in a mid-19th century Alexandrian manner and their messages and purposes are relevant even today. Free.
