WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. Spoken Word Poetry Slam with Shelly Bell
September 16, 2011 - 7:00pm

Join the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association for the first in a series of quarterly spoken word poetry events: WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. Shelly Bell, Director of Seven City Art Society will produce and host the events. The first WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. event on September 16th will feature a performance by Ms. Wise, along with Shelly herself and other talented spoken word poets. Attending the event is free, but for a $10 entry fee, audience members can compete, slam style, for a $100 prize at the end of the night.

Spoken word poetry is the art of bringing written works to life through performance. Spoken word artists create a poetic, theatrical experience that engages audiences of non-poetry and poetry lovers alike. The works are valued for their brutal honesty; non-traditional use of poetic conventions, words, and sounds; and fresh creativity. HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" and "Brave New Voices" have increased the mainstream popularity of spoken word.

Additional WRITE. SPEAK. LIVE. performance events will be held at the Athenaeum on Friday, January 20; Friday, April 13; and Friday, July 20. Admission is free. Learn more about Shelly Bell at www.reverbnation.com/iamshellybell.
